Obsession is defined as “an idea or thought that continually preoccupies or intrudes on a person’s mind”. We as a society tend to view obsession as being a negative. To be obsessed is to be a slave to whatever you are seeking. For an obsession to occur, there has to be some sort of immense pleasure being derived from the action taken. We often hear about it when referring to Obsessive Compulsive Disorders (OCD).
But is being obsessive really a bad trait to have?
The issue lies not in obsession itself but in what people find themselves obsessed with. Being obsessed with Krispy Kreme doughnuts isn’t going to help make the world a better place. If anything it will increase the chances that your wife will leave you for someone with a little more self respect. However, if you were obsess with accumulating as much money as you could in your life time, that would be a different story.
If you were to read up on the pioneers of our time (Elon Musk, Bill Gates, etc.), you would find something that they all shared in common. They were convinced that they would their dream a reality. There was no “if”, only a “when”. That level of obsession is the reason their names will be remembered long after they have left this world. Their resolve has etched their names in history forever.
It is our duty to become obsessed with our Mission, whatever it may be. If you don’t know what your mission is, then you better make it a priority to find out. You were put on this planet with x amount of time. That clock started ticking that day you were born, and it continues to tick as you read this now.
Find your purpose. Find what motivates you. Establish a clear goal. Achieve the goal. Die satisfied.
You must be passionate about it. It must consume you. Every day it must be on your mind. Each day you must move the needle a little closer to the point of realization. Decide for yourself what is that you want more than anything. Doesn’t matter what others think as long as it makes sense to you.
20 years from now if you were to be lying on your deathbed, it should not be filled with regret. It should be filled with content as you knew your purpose and did everything in your power to make that idea a reality. The difference between the top 10% and everyone else is how far they were willing to go to get what they wanted. There are two types of people in this world:
- Those who get what they want
- Everyone else
